No tudung rule on non-Muslim models

ALOR STAR: Local authorities in Kedah have not imposed any ruling that makes it mandatory for advertisers to only feature female models wearing tudung (head scarves).

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Taulan Rasul said, however, Muslim models were encouraged to wear the tudung.

“We are not imposing any ruling for non-Muslim models to wear the tudung. But we will only allow advertisements that portray decently clad models,” he said.

Proper: A billboard with a woman model who is not wearing a tudung or head scarf. Kedah local councils will accept advertisements that portray decently clad models.

Taulan said amendments would be made to the advertising by-laws of the local councils to impose a dress code on female models featured in advertisements that would require them to be decently dressed.

“We only want decently clad models to be featured on billboards in the state,” he added.

He said a sexy appearance reflected an uncivilised culture.

“We do not want people to dress as though they are from the dark ages.”

Taulan said the local authorities had advised advertisers to voluntarily abide by the proposed new dress code policy, adding that non-Malay councillors had not objected to it.

“In fact, they are happy that we are doing something to protect women from being exploited,” he said, adding that women should be treated with respect.
